Useful Donk Bets

It’s usually bad to be thought of a donkey at the poker table. For one, the style is easily exploitable by savvy player, but there are times when you can use your knowledge of the style to your advantage. When you see a tight poker player, but he’s a weak tight player, donk betting can be a great weapon to use to get him to fold a better hand. Say you’ve put him on a range of AK-A10 and KQJ hits the board, he bets and you donk bet into him without the straight. As a true tight poker player, it’s probably a high percentage occurrence that he will fold to your donk bet. Why? Well he’s super tight with his chips and if he’s not confident he has the nuts on a given hand (i.e he checks to you or he bets small on the flop), your reraise will make him consider that his top pair top kicker hand may not be the best, and thus he’ll be more likely to fold. It’s also a good idea to see if other real donks are doing this to this player and it’s working. After all, it’s all about adaptation, and if they’re exploiting him and it works, why not jump on the band wagon and exploit away?
