Battlefield Bad Company 2 is going to get dedicated servers on its PC version but gamers and clans still don’t have the ability to build their own. Instead, they will have to rent servers directly from a host authorized by DICE.
The code that is required to build and put up the dedicated servers will not be released along with the game. This is a first for the Battlefied series considering that both Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 were both released with those files available. Both instalments also came with dedicated linux server hosting support.
In an interview, Bad Company 2 producer Gordon Van Dyke said that the new setup is going to be implemented in order to preserve the game’s integrity on the PC. The only way to host a dedicated server for the latest instalment would be to rent one from a host authorized by the game developer. Van Dyke, however, was quick to emphasize that they are not going to make profits from the server rentals. He adds that they will see the outcome of this new move after the instalment is launched. Van Dyke also promised that there are going to be available dedicated server rentals in all the major regions around the globe.
The PC beta version for Battlefield Company 2 will be implemented and released from January 28 to February 25. It is going to feature 32 player battles. The full game version will launch on March 5.
