The 3 Types Of Roses

Filed under: Gardening Portal — admin @ 11:15 pm

There are several rose classification schemes used throughout the world. But the most popular system is that proposed by The American Rose Society (in cooperation with the World Federation of Roses). While the other systems are still in use, the majority of internationally established societies have adopted this one.

According to the American Rose Society, there are 3 main groupings of roses: the Species, Old Garden Roses, and Modern Roses.

Species Roses

This is the ancestor of every rose and are commonly referred to as “wild roses.” They are easy to identify. Usually they have 5 petals, bloom once a season, and are often thorny shrubs or climbers.

Several popular Species Roses are: Cherokee Roses, Dog Roses, Gallic Roses, French Roses, and Redleaf Roses.

Species Roses flourish in temperate climates, and can be found throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

Old Garden Roses

Unlike Species Roses, which existed millions of years before humans walked the earth, Old Garden Roses are a class identified as of 1867.

Most Old Garden Roses bloom once a season, usually at the start of summer. They grow in several shrub and vine sizes. Although colors can vary, this class are usually white or pastel in color. These “antique roses” are generally preferred for lawns and home gardening because they are easy to grow.

Some Old Garden Roses are: China, Tea, Moss, Damask, Bourbon, Hybrid Perpetual and Noisette roses. Many antique roses have a strong, sweet scent, which makes them very popular.

Modern Roses

Old Garden Roses are the predecessors of Modern Roses. Any rose identified after 1867, is considered a Modern Rose. Very popular, This group is the result of crossbreeding the hybrid tea with the polyanthus (a variety of primrose).

The colors of Modern Roses are varied, rich and vibrant. Most roses in this class will flower repeatedly with the proper care. Perhaps that is why horticulturists find this class so attractive.

The most popular roses found in the class of Modern Roses are: the hybrid tea, floribunda, and grandiflora. Although Modern Roses are adored by florists and gardeners, they do require a little extra care, and do not adapt well to colder environments.

Further Classification

After a rose has been classified into 1 of the 3 main groupings, it can be further classified by color, scent, ancestry, date of introduction, growth habit, blooming characteristics and size. It is not always possible for horticulturists to classify every rose, especially the hybrid roses which can seem to be a grouping all their own.

But after a point, it is time to quit classifying and start growing. I think we have reached that point.

Brazil ERP Selection: Localization Notes - Oracle, Microsoft, SAP, Microsiga

Filed under: Software Tips — admin @ 8:51 pm

Oracle E-Business Suite, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP mySAP or SAP B1 (Business One) - these ERPs are localized for Brazilian market from the standpoint of tax & legislation compliance as well as Portuguese interface and language support. Such features as multicurrency support are common for all leading ERP brands, however localization dilemma also includes such country specific modules as Payroll & HR, Manufacturing (especially reporting to inspection authorities), State & Municipal taxes

When multinational corporation launches its operations in Brazil or another country MRP selection dilemma is probably one of the first to address. The realities of international business should be considered from all possible sides and possible problematic points. Let us give you the questionnaire.

• Centralized Control. In your headquarters you would like to retain control over ERP data entry, reporting, management resources, etc. The meaning of control is typically broader, than it looks on the initial spot. Consider hypothetical situation when you need to make changes in your overseas finance department management team. To secure your flexibility in this scenario ERP system should be “understandable” (English language support) and its interface should be standard: Microsoft, SAP, Oracle or another recognizable worldwide brand - this will allow you to find qualified manager, who understands and shares your company ideology and is familiar with the MRP interface

• Government Audit. If you plan to deploy your headquarters ERP, which is not recognized worldwide, then you might expect that this system custom “localization” will not convince local audit authorities. In some cases you are still OK - if you don’t sell or provide services in Brazil, if you only export your production, for example

• Payroll & HR functionality. It is known problem of worldwide ERPs - they have to optimize their localization efforts for the specific country. Payroll legislation might be considered as the second echelon. In Brazil payroll is definitely better automated by local developed ERP, such as Microsiga. On the other hand, Payroll might be realized in local specialized payroll automation application and financial data could be relatively easy integrated with ERP

• Industry Verticals. Transportation industry: Bill of Lading, Monthly Agent Settlement report, Hazardous materials transportation documentation - these types of vertical and horizontal functionalities are good candidates for customization. We are giving you examples of the business logic, where you should be ready to deploy local customization experts

• Local versus Worldwide Brands. This question requires deep analysis. Worldwide brand enables you to retain worldwide control over your ERP, while local MRP enables you to comply to local legislation, including such “difficult” areas as payroll, human resources, local taxation, etc.

The (not so) Naked City

Filed under: Miscellaneous — admin @ 7:09 pm

How many of you have ever been to Times Square in New York? Not
for Dick Clark and the whole New Year’s Eve thing, nor for the
Disney scene. I’m talking about for the porn shops, peep show
booths, and what have you. If you haven’t, you might want to go
now before just about all of them disappear.

In 1995, New York City passed a zoning law that restricted adult
businesses to commercial and manufacturing districts - in
essence, non-residential zones. Even within the commercial and
manufacturing districts, there were statutes for the placement
of such adult businesses. For example, they couldn’t exist
within 500 feet of a church, nor within 500 of a school, nor
within 500 feet of each other. It seems, though, that many
enterprises in certain areas such as Times Square and Greenwich
Village were able to escape the “adult business” moniker. A
business would have to showcase at least a 40% inventory stock
of adult material to be labeled as an adult enterprise.

Therefore, a lot of businesses were able to skate by in largely
residential neighborhoods by stocking 39% or less sexual
material. Even if a sex shop derived the bulk of its revenue
from sex tapes, peep show booths, etc., legally they were well
within their rights to exist in those places. Well, the city
passed an ordinance in 2001 to close the loophole posed by the
“adult business” description. And an appellate court in New York
state recently (in April) upheld the new definition of what an
adult-themed enterprise was. You’ll find the new definition at
http://www.gaycitynews.com/gcn_415/courtupholdssexshop.html
along with more of the story. The bottom line is, unless this
ruling of the appellate court is overturned, a lot of sex shops
will suddenly be found to be in contempt of the zoning law.

I have a somewhat tongue-in-cheek question: In a city of over
eight million within an approximate 300 sq. mi. area, what isn’t
a residential neighborhood? Granted, I’m not the first person to
ever hold this view.

But (somewhat) seriously, I’d always considered Times Square one
of the great porn meccas in the world; possibly the greatest on
the eastern seaboard. If you’re a porn aficionado like I am, and
you live in the mid-Atlantic region on the east coast, you make
your pilgrimage to New York. If you live on the left coast, you
make your way to The Valley. If you live in Europe, you call on
the Red Light District in Amsterdam.

Now, the porn shrine in the Square is no more. (*with mock
dramatic intensity, one fist raised to the sky*) Damn you,
Mickey Mouse, damn you!

How to Hide from Sudoku

Filed under: Being Creative — admin @ 4:30 pm

My wife noticed that I was doing the Sudoku puzzles in our local rag instead of the crossword. They start easy on Monday and increase in difficulty towards the end of the week. She decided I should have a thick book of Sudoku puzzles to take up the next twenty years. She bought me a copy of Jumbo Sudoku for Christmas. You can get your copy by calling 1-800-327-6388 (Time, Inc.). Tell them that Taylor Jones, the hack writer, sent you.

The puzzles in Jumbo Sudoku are rated easy to fiendish. However, watch out for the ones labelled “easy.” Some are easy; others are harder then those labelled “fiendish.”

To solve a puzzle you just look at it. Pretty soon the right side of your brain will solve it for you unless you are left-handed. I’m not sure what you do then.

Look at a sub square. What numbers are missing?

Look at a full-length row. What numbers are missing?

Look at a full-length column. What numbers are missing?

Okay, write in the missing numbers.

Easy, right? What, you still have missing numbers?

Try this: Look at the three sub-squares forming a 3 x 9 column. Say there is a “9″ in the left column of the top square. There is another “9″ in the right hand column of the bottom square. Surely, there must be a “9″ in the MIDDLE column of the center square (and I didn’t call you, Shirley).

What, the nine is already there? Good!

If not see if you can determine which of the three elements is the “9.” If there is only one blank space, it is the “9.” If you can’t determine which square it is, then put a tiny “9″ in the boxes it could be in.

Keep doing this until you are done.

If you can’t solve even an easy Sudoku puzzle, may I suggest having a friend help you?

You can also switch to the Danish board game, Husker-du®? Don’t play this with little kids. They forget nothing and will beat your pants off.

If that doesn’t work, RUN!

The End
