What Price For Your Health?

Filed under: University of Insurance — admin @ 5:53 am

How do you put a value good health? For many it is priceless. So how much are you prepared to pay to seek the best medical advice available?

Private health insurance is one of those lifestyle choices all us of face.

Do you go with the system and use the health safety net that the public health-care program provides to all Australians? Or seek the extra security and choice provided by private health insurance?

About a third of all adult Australians have private health insurance with the industry worth $5 billion dollars a year.

But that figure is likely to increase. From July 1 there have been changes introduced to the cost of private health care and many people have rushed in to take advantage of the savings.

The initiative of the Federal Government has been to try and increase the number of people covered by private insurance. The great fear is that as the population ages the public health system will not be able to cope with the increases in pressure an aging population brings.

Baby Boomers, those people born before 1964, make up the largest segment of Australia’s population and the demand for health services will increase considerably as they age.

The changes after July 1 have meant increases in health care contributions if you’re over 30. There is a 2 per cent impost per year until you are 65 years of age, with the maximum impost being based on a 65-year old.

Get in early and you retain the benefits of no impost.

For example both a 65-year old and a 75-year old will both have a 70 per cent impost. This only applies to hospital cover and there is no impost on ancillary cover. This provides an incentive for people below 30 to buy private health insurance and retain it for life.

The premium is based on the age you join. So if you join at 35 you have a 10 per cent loading which you retain for the length of your cover.

Ricki Smith, Manager Corporate Relations with HBF says there are a number of benefits that private health insurance brings.

This includes choice of doctor, choice of hospital and location and timeliness.

“You can go to hospital when you want to and avoid waiting,” she says.

“Some people think it is expensive and don’t realize there is so much choice. There are so many options it does become quite cheap.”

Additional options often include hospital room rates, dental, optical and physiotherapy benefits.

If you’re in a higher salary bracket, for example earning over $50,000 a year as a single or over $100,000 as a family, there is also a penalty if you don’t have private health insurance.

An additional 1 per cent higher Medicare levy to these income earners will cost over $1,000 a year. This is more than the cost of private health insurance.

Private health insurance buys peace of mind. But what if something goes wrong and you have a dispute with your insurer.

The Private Health Insurance Ombudsman handles complaints regarding health funds.

They receive 2,000 complaints a year covering about $80 million in transactions. This ranges claims ranging from $50 for a few physiotherapy visits to $50,000 for a multiple-heart valve replacement.

Norman Branson, Ombudsman for Private Health Insurance says their role is to act as the umpire.

He says about half the claims require the Ombudsman to take specific action.

“The biggest area is where somebody thinks they’re covered and they ultimately find out they’re not,” he said.

So if you are in the market for private health insurance here are 10 tips to help you find your way through the huge choice on offer.

10 Private Health Insurance Tips

1. Work out what you want cover for - basic, hospital, dental, optical etc.

2. Contact a range of funds. Meet with them personally to discuss your needs.

3. Don’t buy on price alone. Price is not the best determining factor. Look at the package and options available to suit your age and lifestyle.

4. Look for a product that suits your needs, For example you can save quite a lot of money if you’re prepared to share a hospital room.

5. Look for a fund that has a good reputation for making claims in a timely way.

Are You Speaking the Same Language in Your Office?

Filed under: Miscellaneous — admin @ 2:00 am

The other day I was talking with a client who was looking for a
partner and using one of the online dating services. She had
requested someone who “liked traditional roles,” and was finding
all sorts of surprises when she talked with the gentlemen with
whom she had been matched. It seems “traditional roles” meant to
one man that the man works outside the home, and the woman is
the homemaker. To another man, it meant both have paying jobs,
but the woman does the cooking, cleaning and childcare, and the
man does the household repairs and lawn work. To yet another
man, it meant the woman must be monogamous, while the man can be
polygamous.

Our assumptions about language can get us into a lot of trouble
in communication, and nowhere is this more common than in the
workplace. Today’s office typically includes people from
different cultures, and business may be conducted with people
from other cultures and countries as well. As the US becomes
more diversified, we can no longer count on having the same
language or customs within an office.

Some examples? In some cultures, the contract is binding and
stands as it is when completed. In another, it is the beginning
of a long series of negotiations.

In one culture, a handshake means a deal. In another, a contract
is needed.

In some cultures, a price is fixed and non-negotiable. In many
others, bartering is more common, and a price mentioned is just
a suggestion to be argued around.

In some offices, a deadline is set in stone. In another, it’s
always bendable.

Even within the US, there are a large number of “cultures.”
People in the south called northerners “Yankees,” and claim they
are brusque, and cold.

Northerners may talk about the inefficiency in the south, or the
long drawn-out conversations which don’t “stick to business.”

Even within locations there are differences. San Antonio, Texas,
where I live, is over 50% Hispanic. Up the road just an hour is
a town that was originally a German settlement, and then another
hour north, is Austin, the state capital, where the demographics
are yet again quite different.

During my years as a fundraiser, writing grants, I discovered
many differences as I dealt with city government, county, state
and federal. The rules were different within each, in subtle
ways I had to learn as I went along.

Are you looking for a common language in your office? One way to
bring this about is to establish an EQ culture.

Emotional Intelligence is a field that pertains to how we
understand and manage our emotions, and whether you like it or
not, emotions are a large part of our daily dealings in the
business world. We are just now beginning to acknowledge that
business is about relationships. In order to have effective
relationships, you have to have a common language.

Emotional Intelligence involves competencies which we all need
to get along, relate, conduct business, communicate, lead, and
accomplish team goals.

Such competencies as Resilience (how well you bounce back after
failures and rejections), Flexibility (being able to deal with
change and diversity), and Intentionality (saying what you mean
and meaning what you say) are badly needed in today’s workplace.
We need names for these competencies and qualities, so we can
all be reading off the same page.

What does ‘work ethic’ mean in your office? What does ‘a deal’s
a deal’ mean? What does ‘this is the policy mean’? What does
‘business attire’ mean? What does ‘on time’ mean?Assuredly it
means something different to each person who uses the phrases or
hears them, and this is the beginning of serious communication
problems between genders, between age groups, among cultures,
and between any two individuals.

Bringing a common language to your office can make it more
efficient, more productive, and more change-proficient. Capisci?
Comprende? Haben Sie das verstanden? C’est compréhensible ?

In “Beyond Race and Gender,” author R. Roosevelt Thomas defines
managing diversity as “a comprehensive managerial process for
developing an environment that works for all employees.”

The way you develop this environment, working with a group of
disparate individuals, is to create your own unique culture,
building consensus, community and language.

There are tremendous rewards in hiring and bringing together a
diverse group of employees, but only if you can get them working
together well. Without a common language, the stress can be
counter-productive. Consider an EQ culture program for your
organization. Emotional Intelligence is being embraced worldwide
because its appeal is universal. We all have emotions, after
all.

What a Difference a Coach Makes

Filed under: World Of Self Improvement — admin @ 2:26 pm

In being a resident of the Tampa Bay area since 1979 I have had front line exposure to the highs and (mostly) lows of our local professional football team, the Buccaneers. However, in 2003, for the first time in team history, the Bucs went to the Super Bowl. This was also the first year that the team had John Gruden as their coach.

Coincidence? Probably not.

All you sports fans will remember that it wasn’t until Phil Jackson came to coach the Chicago Bulls that Michael Jordan was part of a championship team.

The difference, again, was the coach.

Every athlete, professional or amateur, has a coach. So do other people of high stature, such as Oprah and Barbara Streisand.

Guess what?…So do I!

However, the difference is that an athlete has a coach for the game, where as Oprah, Barbara and myself have a coach for something much bigger and more important: Life.

Here are three advantages of you having your own personal Life Coach.

  • First, your coach wants you to “win”. Your coach is there to totally support you, encourage you, and challenge you to be your best. Your coach wants you to have the greatest life that you possibly can. Your coach is 100% percent invested in your greatness. Your coach will know you like no one else has and because of all this, you and your coach will team-up and create the life that you will love to live.
  • Second, your coach will help you to create an effective and fulfilling life plan. Your life plan will give you direction. You will have specific goals to aim for and daily action steps to work yourself towards your goals. With a life plan you are in action to having a fully prosperous life. Your life coach will help you stay on your path and hold you accountable for your highest good.
  • Third, your coach will help you see your blind spots. As an outside observer, your coach will be able to see areas of your life that you cannot see. Your coach will “shine a light” into these areas so you may gain insight and awareness. When you have more insight and awareness you can be more proactive and make more successful decisions in life.

An athletic coach has one goal: for the athlete to win. Likewise your life coach is committed for you to have your greatest win: Win in life!

Insurance, Fear Of The Unknown

Filed under: University of Insurance — admin @ 10:46 am

Now why in the world do we need insurance?

Back in the good old days when the earth was still flat and we were all living in the same time zone you would have had little knowledge of insurance except for maybe leaving something as insurance for a loan you made.

There is nothing wrong with the concept of insurance, it most certainly has its value in the bigger picture of things.

What is wrong is the way in which many people are bulldozed into signing for insurance policies that they don’t really need or which will not be able to tend their needs once they need it.

As there are many first-class insurance companies out there, there are also the few that are just out to make a quick buck from you creating never ending problems.

Many people spend a large portion of their income on insurance, health, car, household and life to name but a few. There are many others policies that the insurance companies have invented to tend for other events that might occur.

All insurance is hedged against a bet. Unmistakably based on our inherent fear, which is also the sales mechanism for selling insurance.

There is always a fear of the unknown, there where you have not been and for that matter don’t want to go to either. The insurance agent will take you there and explain what it is like and make the fear almost unbearable.

Picture this scenario, you and your wife are sitting in the dining room and directly opposite you is the insurance agent. He is sitting forward and telling you the story of this unfortunate family who failed to take out insurance the day he was there and before they could sign the contracts the unthinkable happened, and now they are stranded with nowhere to go.

You don’t want this to happen to you. This is followed by one or two stories of people, and there are pictures to prove this, who did take out insurance in the nick of time. Your heart goes out to that poor family who now face hardship and turmoil and you are glad for the other families who are now able to make it and move on.

The picture painted in your mind plays with your fear of not knowing what will happen tomorrow and you certainly don’t want something like that happening to you without being prepared.

The agent explains all the benefits you will have if you take out this policy now, and in light of what you have just heard and witnessed with pictures, it not only seems like a good idea, it is an absolute necessity.

The insurance agent then looks at you and your wife waiting for an answer, he does not speak and there is an odd silence. You ask about one or two points, he explains each one perfectly and asks if you have any further questions. You answer no, simply because you actually don’t know any better. He hands you the contract and a pen.

This is nothing more than pure sales, the pitch, overcoming objections and closing the sale.

Yes you can cancel the contract later but this process will probably end up taking an entire day of your time and endless irritation.

The strange thing though is that you are the one betting that something will happen to you, you believe it. The insurance company on the other hand are betting that it will not happen.

This is quite logical if you think of it, how otherwise would the insurance company make a profit? Whether you believe it or not, they are in business to make a profit, as is any other business. So there is nothing wrong with it.

Where you need to be careful however is buying your insurance with emotion. Now this is a contradiction in terms because all purchases are made based on emotion, you might think there is logic involved, but it is a very tiny percentage.

Never sign immediately, take a day or so to review and let your emotions settle, then make the final decision. Also give yourself time to go through the written material, the fine print, very fine print and very very fine print.

It is a major pain in the you know where, but it will give you a good indication of what you will not be getting. Speak to the agent again and clarify all the points you are uncomfortable with and make sure that the policy you are considering is made for you.

Remember fear of the unknown is your biggest enemy. You will not conquer that fear but take time to make you decisions carefully when buying insurance of any kind and don’t get bulldozed into signing a contract that will end up being of no or little value the day you really need it to come through.

A Sauna Story

Filed under: Plugs — admin @ 9:48 am

If you didn’t already know it worked, the concept behind saunas might seem a bit strange: sitting in a wood hut, sweating, with an icy shower to top it off - it doesn’t sound like the most relaxing pursuit. But those Scandinavians know their health treatments. If you’ve never had a sauna, you don’t know what you’re missing.

The Origin of Saunas

The sauna as such is of Nordic origin. But there are similar concepts in many other cultures, including the Turkish hammam and the Native American sweat lodge. That’s probably because the detoxifying properties of sweating are intuitively clear. But there’s also the social and cultural element of it - saunas and their cousins have been around for thousands of years as a method for people to bond and restore themselves in many more ways than the physical. Sweat lodges, for example, became a symbol of Native American resistance against the early settlers and their use was suppressed in proportion to how defiant the tribe was (the Sioux especially got it in the neck).

The practice is taken so seriously in Finland that a Finnish town, Heinola, hosts annual World Championships where the world’s most hardy sweat bathers battle to see who can stay in the fearsome heat of 110 degrees Celsius the longest (the usual temperature is about 80 degrees). Considering how deeply ingrained this pursuit is in Finnish culture it’s probably not surprising that the country has taken most of the titles since the competition started in 1998 (although Belarus has had a look in for the women’s events in recent years).

Built or bought, it could be fun to inaugurate your new room with a party - a popular pursuit in all sauna-loving parts of the world. But be careful, and if you’re having a party limit the booze while sweat bathing. Heat exhaustion can be very dangerous, even lethal, and will be exacerbated by excessive alcohol. That raises the wider issue of safety. There are some golden rules with saunas. Among them are: don’t stay in for too long, particularly if you are not used to them; if it’s a steam bath, don’t put too much water on the coals because excessive steam can scald; don’t wear jewelry while you’re in there; and don’t do it if you’re very tired, or, as we discussed above, have drunk a lot of alcohol.

Psychic Healing: Repatterning

Filed under: Tech + More — admin @ 4:57 pm

When it comes to psychic healing, human beings are dynamos. In many ways, when tested in a lab, it is the strongest natural psychic gift ever tested. It is such a strong gift that untrained people, those with little to no instruction, can help people heal around 10% faster than normal by just vaguely trying. This is an amazing gift, comparable to many medications and surgeries in over-all effectiveness.

As with most things, training and practice can help to improve a persons skill level. The practice I would like to go over here is a process known as repatterning.

Repatterning is a simple enough idea to use, once you get the basic concept down, but one that has hundreds of thousands of uses.

Let me use an example from the world of healing to get things started. Here is a hypothetical situation.

The person you are trying to heal has no known medical disorders, though they are so sick that they might not live. The medical system has given up on any attempt at treatment outside of low level pain control. Now that medicine has failed, you are called in to try and effect a cure, often the normal course of things. You begin by getting a feel for things and after attempting to sense what the problem is, you can determine that, while they are obviously ill, you have no name for the problem either! So do you give up? No, of course not.

What you do is find a healthy person and get a sense of their properly arranged bio-field, when you have a good idea of what a healthy person feels like, you change the pattern of the patient to match the healthy field.

Such restructuring can make a vast difference in the health of an ailing person. As often as not, this simple but powerful technique can give a person on the brink a chance to survive, even when all other options have failed.

Now, after you get a feel for what is healthy in a human being, you will be able to make such changes without examining another, healthier man or woman, before starting. While the strength and feeling of an individuals bio-field is as varied as their fingerprints, it is easy to tell what is properly patterned and is not.

Now lets walk through the steps, before applying them on handy passers by.

*As with all psychic techniques you will want to start in a relaxed and centered fashion. Take a few deep breaths and let all of the tension flow out of your body. Just relax and don’t worry about starting until you feel perfectly ready.

*When you are ready, go into a deep conceptual state, if you wish, take a few moments to hold a self-propagating concept of relaxed focus and synchronistic brainwave activity. This just means that you generate the concept of the state you wish to enter and let it grow in strength until it takes off and continues on its own without constant reinforcement. For added depth of state, hold a concept that will continue to take you into a more focused and synchronous place.

*Properly in state, gain a sense of the information field of your patient. Just sense this field for a few minutes, let it tell you what is wrong, or right, with the person. Don’t judge the information at this point. Just record what it is telling you.

*Now, pick a healthy person to compare this field to. Notice what things are different and what matches up.

*Focusing on the original bio-field again, hold, in conceptual form the idea that this field is changing to match the healthy parts of the other, well persons, field.

*As you are maintaining the concept of change, you must also continue to psychically sense the field you are working on. This feedback will allow you to make very exacting changes in any system in real time.

*Once the changes have taken place, and it should only take a few minutes, keep the new pattern steady and solid for around an hour.

It is possible that with this basic skill you could learn to influence any active, energetic, system.

By focusing your repatterning a bit more, you can often increase the speed of healing. The reason for this is simple. When you heal a person the energy for the corrections comes from the other person. If you focus your efforts their body will only go after the problem area with faster levels of repair.

Here are a few other things you might wish to try with your repatterning skills.

*Working with plants is a great and rewarding exercise for repatterning practice. Find a plant that is doing poorly and change its information to be more like that of another plant that is thriving. Plants are easily influenced and will respond very well to your efforts.

*If a friend, or yourself, gets a small scratch or bruise, take a few minutes to alter the damaged information back to an uninjured state. If you wish to practice this on yourself and no one else is around, compare the damaged area with an undamaged one on your own body. You should be able to more than double the speed of healing in this way. Even if you need a bit more time to practice, the very act of trying to fix the problem will help!

*If you are feeling low on energy, change your pattern to reflect a more energetic one. Copy a hyper friends feeling of energy, or use your memory of the last time you felt peppy and bring it back. The longer you hold it, the stronger it will be. As an additional perk, you can increase the feeling of energy by quite a bit compared to the state you are copying! I often use this as a solid pick me up in the afternoon.

True, no one is going to be perfect at repatterning over night. It takes time and effort to learn to do well and there are many other skills, as well as specific patterns that you have to learn, before declaring mastery of the subject. With time and discipline you can do it though and it is an ability that is useful enough to be well worth the daily practice.

Atkins Diet Plan - What’s The Catch

Filed under: Food + Cooking — admin @ 3:02 pm

The Atkins diet Plan breakfast can usually composed of eggs strips of bacon and coffee. A snack might include coffee with cream, and chunks of cheese. A huge steak fried in butter could be dinner. Doesn’t this sound really good? It seems very tempting but there is a catch.

In the beginning you will have to give up most carbs, such as breads, potatoes, pasta, rice and other things like chocolate, cake, some fruits. In theory, when carbs are eliminated from the diet, the body burns stored fat. Weight loss is quicker because fat burns more calories than carbs.

Stable blood sugar levels help you to feel fuller thereby damping your appetite. The Induction is the first phase of the Atkins diet, which you follow for at least two weeks. Only 20 grams of carbs a day, but you can eat lots of red meat, chicken, fish, eggs cream and butter. That you want.

During this phase, your body learns to burn fat and not carbs. The ongoing weight loss phase is the second stage. Add 5 grams of carbs a day until you get to your critical carbohydrate level for losing weight. How many carbs can YOU eat and still lose between 1 and 3 pounds a week? Bread, pasta rice and potatoes are still taboo.

The pre-maintenance or third phase is started when you have only 5-10 pounds left to lose in order to reach your goal weight. Yes! Now you get to add 10 grams a day for one week, to your carb intake, to help your body adjust to the addition of carbs to your diet, and to the final phase of the diet.

Lifetime maintenance, phase 4, teaches you ways to stay motivated. Your carb intake is limited to 90 grams in a day. You will be eating low carbs for the rest of your life. Some doctors have expressed concern about the long tern effects of the Atkins and other low carb plans.

High saturated fat consumption may cause an increased risk of heart disease. The lack of certain nutrients in this diet could cause future health problems. The limited intake of calcium could possibly put you at risk for Osteoporosis. The low antioxidant nutrients could lead to cancer, heart disease and premature aging.

The Atkins diet is boring in the Induction phase. Vegetarians have a hard time with Atkins, particularly in the early stages, due to the limited amount of vegetables, nuts seeds and beans. The Atkins diet presents an image of good health from a proper diet. Some are concerned that once you go off the diet the weight comes back quickly.

The very low carbs in this diet could cause ketosis which can be dangerous for diabetics. The high cholesterol of this diet may cause constipation and heart disease because of the high fat content. This diet, low in fruits and veggies is consequently low in antioxidants that fight cancer. The Atkins plan is that it’s not intended for long term use and has serious side effects.

The Atkins Plan works, it is that simple. Weight loss is rapid and you can eat as much protein and fat, as you would like. The carbs eliminated by the Atkins diet can cause a loss of antioxidants which are known to prevent some cancers.

This high fat, high protein diet can increase the risk of elevated cholesterol and heart disease. This Diet really works, although some believe you can’t stay on it long term. If you go off the diet or cheat , you will begin to re-gain the weight. Once you start eating a more normal diet the initial weight loss will return.

As with any diet check with a physician-to make sure you are healthy to begin with. The Atkins diet, some believe, is not for long term use and that it poses some serous health risks. If you are overweight, you are already at risk for heart disease and other health problems, and Atkins could increase those risks.

Casting a Writer’s Spell

Filed under: University of Publishing — admin @ 6:03 pm

It amazes me how many publications I read where there are glaring spelling mistakes. Some people rely on their computer’s spell check, but that may be lulling us into lassitude about good common sense spelling. Every writer should have at least one dictionary, though several would be even better. Learn that the dictionary is your pal, with a flick of a few pages you can spell something the right way instead of the wrong way.

Even the most educated person can put out writing that contains obvious spelling errors. I don’t want to send an editor a manuscript with glaring mistakes that make me look unprofessional. There is never a right time to relax over spelling. Now if it seems I am obsessed with the subject, I am. Since the advent of computers and spelling aids I find a real carelessness in printed material.

When young people ask me what I feel is important for a good writer to master, I tell them editing and careful attention to the words you are using. Manuscripts come to me with the most outrageous errors. These should have been caught before ever submitting the write to a publisher, or someone you wish to have look over your work. If in doubt, look it up. There are many good dictionary programs on the computer where you just enter the word you want, or as close to it as possible, and the program will help you with your definition.

Some of the most common mistakes are different spellings for words that sound the same. For instance, who’s and whose. Just remember that the first spelling is a contraction of who is, as in who’s coming to the party. You can figure out many words with a little thought and logic. In grade school our Principal came into the classroom and said principal, with that spelling was easy if you remembered that the principal is your “pal”. That stuck with me.

I use other memory tricks with words. Take dessert and desert. How to remember those? I think of a desert being a barren place, so has only one ’s’. It doesn’t matter what triggers you use, mnemonics can be a great tool. Another puzzler is with your and you’re. Again we look to the you’re to know it is a contraction, while your is a possessive.

Spell check is a great help, but it can add to spelling errors. If the word you use is in the dictionary, it may not show it as an error, even though it is. This is when you use editing and proof-reading to catch such flaws. If an editor sees your submission is proofed and neatly put together, as well as having no spelling errors, your submission will have a much better chance than one with errors.

If you want to be a productive writer, attention to detail is a must. There are thousands of writers out there and your work must have that extra edge to be accepted. Writing is hard work and you must decide how much effort you are willing to expend to assure it is your best work.

All about Acupuncture - The Power of Needles

Filed under: The Medical Way — admin @ 5:07 pm

Acupuncture is a method that originated in China over 5000 years ago. It is a holistic practice that is based on the belief of releasing blocked energy or “chi” in living beings. These energy lines circulate through twelve invisible energy lines known as meridians of the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system in your body so the needle insertions in each of these meridians reduce the respective disease associated with that meridian point.

What acupuncture can do?

Usually people suffer from diseases when energy gets blocked in the meridians. When the needles are inserted into the specific points along the meridian lines, the balanced flow of energy is restored. Acupuncture works effectively because the needles stimulate the release of pain-relieving endorphins into the body, influences the release of neurotransmitters and also enhances the working of autonomic nervous systems. By influencing the electrical currents in the body, acupuncture also improves blood circulation throughout the body.
